Know Your Numbers! Have your Blood Pressure Checked!
Ideal blood pressure is less than 140 /90 or less than 130/80 if you are diabetic.
High Blood Pressure or Hypertension is often called the “silent killer” since it often goes undetected unless we have it checked. Hypertension increases your risk for stroke and heart disease. Reducing your weight, cutting back on high sodium foods and increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables along with exercise can greatly help.
• Choose fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables DAILY!
• Avoid cheeses, luncheon meats, fast foods, breakfast meats, BBQ sauce, Chinese
• Choose lower fat dairy products such as 1% or skim milk and low fat yogurt
• Eliminate trans fats found in cookies, crackers, cakes etc. Read those labels!
• Replace burgers and steaks with fish or poultry (not fried)
• Choose whole grains, heart healthy fats (olive or canola oil), unsalted nuts
And don’t forget…. Ask what your blood pressure is!
